Alanya Castle
A 13th-century Seljuk fortress on a rocky peninsula high above Alanya, with long walls and sea views.
Alanya Castle was rebuilt by the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I after he took the city in the 13th century. Its walls run for several kilometres around the peninsula, enclosing a living neighbourhood, a Byzantine church, cisterns and the inner citadel at the summit.
At sea level stand the octagonal Red Tower and the Seljuk shipyard (Tersane). The castle can be reached by road or by cable car from Damlataş, and the views over both of Alanya’s bays are outstanding.
- →The cable car from Cleopatra Beach is a good alternative to the coach road in peak season.
- →Combine with a boat trip around the peninsula to see the shipyard and sea caves from the water.
