Galata Tower
The fourteenth-century Genoese tower above Karaköy, with a 360° balcony over the Golden Horn and Bosphorus.
Built by the Genoese in 1348 as part of the walls of their Galata colony, the tower later served as a fire lookout. Today it is a museum with an exhibition on its history and a narrow outer balcony offering one of the city’s best panoramas.
The cobbled streets around the tower — Galip Dede, Serdar-ı Ekrem and the slopes down to Karaköy — are full of cafés, design shops and music stores, and connect to İstiklal Avenue via the Tünel funicular.
- →Queues are long at sunset; book mid-morning slots for groups.
- →The balcony is narrow — groups go up in small batches.
- →Lifts serve most floors; the final section is by stairs.
