Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)
One of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world — a labyrinth of vaulted streets, hans and thousands of shops.
Founded in the fifteenth century around two domed bedestens, the Grand Bazaar grew into a covered town of streets, courtyards and workshops. Jewellery, carpets, leather, ceramics, lamps and textiles are each concentrated in their own lanes.
For groups the bazaar works best as a guided orientation followed by free time with a fixed meeting point. Bargaining is normal in most shops; fixed-price stores are increasingly common.
- →Closed on Sundays and on the first days of religious holidays.
- →Agree a clear meeting point — Nuruosmaniye Gate or Beyazıt Gate — and a fixed time.
- →Guests should keep receipts for larger purchases; VAT refund applies at participating shops.
