Taksim Square
The hub of modern Istanbul, with the Republic Monument, the Atatürk Cultural Centre and Taksim Mosque.
Taksim Square marks the start of İstiklal Avenue and is the city’s main transport hub, with metro, funicular to Kabataş and bus connections. The Republic Monument of 1928 stands at its centre.
The rebuilt Atatürk Cultural Centre (AKM) reopened in 2021 as a major opera and concert venue, and the Taksim Mosque was completed the same year. Many group hotels are within a ten-minute walk.
- →Coaches cannot wait on the square; use the hotel driveways or designated drop-off points.
- →Check AKM programmes for opera or ballet evenings for culture groups.
