İstiklal Avenue
The 1.4 km pedestrian avenue from Taksim to Tünel, with its red nostalgic tram, arcades and churches.
Formerly the Grande Rue de Péra, İstiklal Avenue is lined with nineteenth-century buildings, historic consulates, churches, passages such as Çiçek Pasajı, and a mix of global brands and old-established patisseries.
The avenue is busy from late morning until after midnight and is the natural route between Taksim Square and the Galata Tower on any evening programme.
- →Very crowded on weekend evenings — keep groups small and agree regrouping points.
- →The historic tram runs the full length but is slow; walking is usually quicker.
- →Advise guests to keep valuables secure in crowds.
