Sümela Monastery
Cliff-side Byzantine monastery in the Altındere valley, reached by forest paths and stone stairs.
Sümela clings to a sheer rock face high above the Altındere valley, surrounded by dense forest. Tradition dates its foundation to the 4th century; the complex that stands today — chapels, a rock church with layered frescoes, living quarters and an aqueduct — grew over many centuries and is one of the most photographed monuments in Türkiye.
The visit itself is part of the experience: guests leave the vehicle in the valley and walk up through the forest on paths and stone stairs to the monastery entrance. Combined with Altındere Park below, it makes a relaxed half-day or the cultural core of a full day south of Trabzon.
- →Allow 2–3 hours on site including the uphill walk; not suitable for guests with limited mobility.
- →Opening hours and restoration closures change by season — FlyNest reconfirms before each departure.
- →Mornings are quieter; summer weekends bring long queues at the entrance.
