Pamukkale Travertines
Brilliant white calcium terraces and pools formed by thermal springs on a hillside above the plain.
Pamukkale (“cotton castle”) is created by mineral-rich thermal water that flows down the hillside and deposits white calcium carbonate, forming terraces and shallow turquoise pools. Together with Hierapolis it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visitors walk barefoot along a designated path across the terraces to protect the surface. The view at sunset, when the white cliff turns pink and gold, is one of the highlights of Türkiye.
- →Shoes must be removed on the travertines — suggest a small bag for footwear.
- →The surface can be slippery and bright; sunglasses and sun protection are essential.
- →Staying one night allows a sunset or early-morning visit without the day-trip crowds.
