Trabzon Castle
Byzantine-era walls of the old city, next to Zağnos Park and Varlıbaş Mall.
Trabzon Castle is a symbol of the old city. Its roots are ancient, but the walls seen today date mainly from the Byzantine period and the Empire of Trebizond in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the castle was the main line of defence and the seat of military and administrative power.
Sections of wall run through the Ortahisar quarter beside Zağnos Park, Varlıbaş Mall and the municipality building, five minutes from Meydan — an easy walk-by on a city tour.
- →Best experienced on foot from Zağnos Park; no separate entry is needed for the walls.
- →Good stop for families: park, playgrounds and the mall are all next door.
