Marmaris Castle & Museum
Small Ottoman castle above the harbour, home to the town museum and the best view over the marina.
The castle stands on the promontory between the old harbour and the marina, surrounded by the whitewashed lanes of the old town (Kaleiçi). Its present form dates from the Ottoman period, when Süleyman the Magnificent used Marmaris as a base for the 1522 campaign against Rhodes.
Inside, the Marmaris Museum displays finds from the region — amphorae, glassware and coins from sites such as Amos and Knidos — in rooms around a courtyard. The ramparts give a full view over the bay, the marina and the mountains behind the town.
- →The climb through the old town is steep and stepped — not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
- →Combine with the bazaar and marina in a 2–3 hour walking tour; best in the late afternoon.
- →Check opening days and hours before scheduling groups, as the museum closes one day a week.
